Fat under the chin is known as submental fat or a double chin. Fat in this area is very common and you don’t have to be overweight to experience it. Many people are genetically prone to developing a double chin as having looser skin may run in the family. When skin loses its elasticity it becomes unable to hold the fat around the chin tight.
Ageing unfortunately is another big contributor to developing a double chin. As people age, they start to lose muscle which can cause your chin to weaken and fat becomes more prominent in this area.
Reducing fat in the chin area can be difficult and many patients come to us for help after diet and exercise alone have not achieved the results they were seeking.
CoolSculpting for Double Chin
Our CoolSculpting treatment is ideal for treating submental fat under the chin. The non-invasive treatment is quick, effective and has minimal downtime, meaning you will be able to return to your everyday activities almost instantly following treatment.
Many people assume that CoolSculpting is only suitable for larger areas of fat such as the stomach, hips and thighs but with the wide range of different sized applicators, CoolSculpting is now able to effectively treat much smaller areas of the body including the chin, bra fat and upper arms. In 2017 CoolSculpting was FDA cleared to treat ‘lax tissue in conjunction with submental fat’ which makes CoolSculpting the first and only non-surgical fat reduction technology to be FDA cleared for this purpose.
How does CoolSculpting for the chin work?
CoolSculpting is also known as fat freezing and that is what happens during the treatment. Using the cryolipolysis method, the fat cells are frozen during a coolsculpting treatment using a controlled cooling system which will only freeze the fat cells. It does not freeze any of the surrounding skin and tissue. The fat cells are frozen up to a point where they become crystallised which then causes them to die and they are then gradually processed by the body through the lymphatic system before being exposed naturally as waste.
Does CoolSculpting for the chin hurt?
CoolSculpting is not a painful treatment but some may find the initial 5-10 minutes of treatment uncomfortable as the skin starts to freeze. Once the area is frozen, this will cause the area to become numb and you should not experience any pain during this time. However; some patients find having the applicator on the chin area slightly uncomfortable and you are required to sit in the same position for around 30 minutes whilst the treatment is taking place. We recommend that patients bring along something to distract them such as a movie or a podcast which can be played whilst the treatment is carried out. Our expert practitioners will be available at all times to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible for the duration of your treatment.
