New Boob Jobs

The world of cosmetic surgery is constantly changing and new advances in techniques and surgical options are always appearing. Breast enlargement surgery has come a long way since the first silicone breast implants were used for breast augmentation surgery in 1962.

So what’s new?

The top breast enlargement developments

At The Private Clinic, we like to be at the forefront of new developments and we pride ourselves on being able to offer the most advanced procedures performed by the UK’s top consultant plastic surgeons.

Post-Pain Management

One of the biggest drawbacks of all types of surgery, not just breast augmentation is pain management post-procedure. Our surgeons all use a technique in surgery that helps patients manage their pain without the need for continuous pain-relief medication. A long-lasting local anaesthetic is used within the breast pocket and along the incision line to ensure that the patient wakes up pain-free. This local anaesthetic is different from the one that you may have experienced at your dentist for example where it wears over after a few hours. Bupivacaine can last for up to 72 hours post-surgery meaning that initial period pain will be dramatically reduced. This method may be referred to as honeycomb pain relief but this just refers to the pattern that is created in the molecule make-up of this drug.  You should still expect a certain degree of soreness post-op but it has definitely improved from how it once was in the past.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Gummy bear implants are actually nothing new here in the UK but through internet research across American websites and chat forums, many patients come in asking for this particular type of implant.

Silicone implants were actually banned in the USA in 1992 meaning all breast augmentations were performed with saline implants. In 2006 the ban on silicone gel implants was finally lifted by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It was then in 2012 that Gummy bear implants made an appearance in the USA breast implant market.

Gummy bear implants are cohesive silicone gel implants which, when you have a breast implant procedure in the UK, you will most likely be offered as standard. It is not common for a saline implant to be used in the UK market.

The USA named the implants gummy bear implants because of the thick gel that is described to being similar to gummy bear sweets and if you were to cut the implant in half, for example, it would keep its form. The term gummy bear implants were a marketing tool to help describe the advanced silicone implant technology which has only been around for over 30 years in the UK.

Quick Recovery Times

Surgery is always associated with long recovery times and a lot of time spent in bed. Breast Augmentation these days, however, is a relatively quick procedure that allows patients to return to almost all of their everyday activities within a week. Although performing on stage 4 days post breast augmentation like Iggy Azalea may not be a realistic goal, it is important to remember that everyone heals differently so you should not be comparing yourself against others recovery times. Breast augmentation at The Private Clinic does not require drains and many patients do not require extensive amounts of post-operative pain killers.  The anaesthesia used during the procedure has also changed from the nausea-inducing anaesthetics from the past. Many patients are up and about shortly after their procedure has taken place and suffer no side effects. The combination of all the new techniques has created a breast augmentation procedure that is quick to both perform and recover from.

Keller Funnel

The Keller funnel was developed in 2009 and it has proved itself to be a revolutionary bit of equipment for enhanced efficiency during breast implant surgery.  The Keller Funnel is a clear, cone-shaped device and looks like an icing bag with a large opening at one end and then a small opening at the opposite end called the tip. The breast pocket is prepared to receive the implant as normal before the implant is then poured into the top of the Keller funnel.  The tip of the Keller funnel is then placed into the prepared breast pocket using a small incision in the crease of the breast and by gently squeezing the funnel it slides the implant straight out of the funnel and safely into the breast.

There are many benefits to using a Keller funnel  for breast augmentation which includes;

  1. Shorter incision scar which can be hidden within the natural breast crease.
  2. Reduced risk of infection as the implant does not come into contact with anyone or anything other than the funnel and the breast.
  3. Minimal trauma to the breast implant as the implant is smoothly inserted into the breast pocket with minimal squeezing and pressure meaning it is likely to last longer.
  4. Minimal trauma to the incision site as the amount force placed into this area is reduced which will lessen the risk of bruising and shorten recovery times.
  5. Reduced risk of capsular contracture which in some cases may be caused by the implant touching the patient’s skin before being inserted into the breast pocket. The no-touch technique will reduce the risk of scar tissue forming.

Our surgeons enjoy the ease of using the Keller funnel and our consultant plastic surgeon Mr Adrian Richards said he routinely uses the Keller funnel device after being so impressed with it. It has been one of the best developments in breast augmentation and certainly something to inquire about when visiting surgeons for consultations.
