Did you know liposuction represents the fastest growing cosmetic procedure for men within the UK? Many men choose to correct areas of stubborn fat, unresponsive to exercise or diet efforts, in pursuit of enhancing their confidence, feeling more in proportion or in the hope of achieving a healthier lifestyle. And what areas are they treating? Some of the most popular areas of the body men choose to correct with liposuction include hard-to-shift flanks (love handles), gynecomastia (man boobs), a troublesome double chin and an oversized or undefined stomach.
For the low-down on these popular areas, how they got there and your options for dealing with them, we’ve got you covered in this blog.
Chin and Neck
With age, muscles on the neck gradually become more lax. With the skin on male patients usually heavier and thicker, this means many older men develop a prominent double chin or undefined jaw lines through the years. This can significantly age their appearance and make them look heavier. It is also not unusual for young men, who may also be fit, slim and healthy to have an excess of fat on their lower chin or neck.
So what can be done? Vaser Liposuction and Micro Liposuction are both popular minimally invasive options for removing fat from and contouring this area. Vaser Liposuction, first of all, is an advanced form of liposuction for targeting small stubborn fatty areas in particular regions. And how does it work? In the procedure, tumescent fluid is injected into the area of target, separating fat cells from any connective tissue (reducing later bruising or swelling) before a small probe is inserted. The Vaser probe emits ultrasound energy and liquefies fat cells before they are removed with liposuction. Micro Liposuction is a highly effective alternative, with the ability to remove approximately 10-20ml of fat from the area, which is usually ample to reduce a double chin’s appearance or submental fullness. In Micro Liposuction procedures, tumescent fluid is also injected, prior to making a small incision and inserting very small microcannulas for fat removal. For larger patients with a higher BMI and significant amount of excess fat for extraction, Surgical Liposuction is appropriate. However, a more invasive option, this procedure requires general anaesthetic and involves more downtime post-treatment.
Male Chest (Gynecomastia)
Affecting 15% of adults in the UK, gynecomastia, otherwise known as “man boobs,” occurs when an excess of tissue or fat occurs within the male breast. Creating an irregular appearance, the condition can make some feel self-conscious, leading them to look for a solution.
Excess fat in the area is a form of the condition called pseudo-gynecomastia and commonly a result of factors such as drug addiction, obesity and high Acidic pH levels, of which can be a result of excessive junk food consumption. Psuedo gynecomastia can be resolved by Vaser Liposuction, Micro Liposuction or Surgical Liposuction. When the tissue is thick and hard to extract with Micro Liposuction, Vaser Liposuction is more effective. For patients struggling to tone or shape despite efforts, and looking to achieve ultimate definition, Vaser Hi-Def, a variant of Vaser Liposuction, is a highly advanced solution. The pioneering body contouring procedure removes deep and superficial fat around the muscle groups, to increase the visibility of toning and musculature, leaving a sculpted and athletic appearance.
The infamous ‘muffin top’ or ‘spare tire’ can be corrected with Vaser Liposuction or traditional Surgical Liposuction. In liposuction to this area, a suction is used to remove fatty deposits from underneath the skin as well as above the stomach muscles.
As per above, Surgical Liposuction patients however, tend to be larger in size. Vaser Hi-Def (as pictured to the right) is also an option in liposuction to the abdomen. The procedure can achieve high definition, and with the treatment it is possible to achieve the look of an athletic six pack.
Flanks (Love Handles)
The flanks, or in other words, ‘love handles’ are another popular area of target. This is the hard to budge fat at the side of your body, in the area between the ribs and hips. Unfortunately, excessive sugary, starchy or fatty food leaves behind this pesky fat, spilling over our waistbands. Stress and a lack of sleep are also contributors of this weight gain, and even more, they can alter hormones in a way which encourages the body to store fat instead of burn it.
How can you say a happy good bye to this area unresponsive to efforts? Vaser Liposuction or Surgical Liposuction are both effective option for eliminating troublesome fat pockets from the waist.
How many areas can I treat at the same time?
For Vaser and Micro Liposuction, and the traditional procedure, several areas can be targeted at one time. Although, at The Private Clinic, we advise a limit of the amount of fat to be extracted in one session. For Vaser Liposuction, we recommend a maximum of 3 litres per session, for Micro Liposuction, 3.5 litres and for Surgical Liposuction, your surgeon will inform you of the amount of fat that can be removed in your individual case.
