What are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller. They are red, blue or purple veins that commonly appear on the surface of the thighs, calves and ankles. They begin as tiny capillaries and appear as blue or red squiggles.
Most people often seek treatment for spider veins because of cosmetic concern. However, it is also common for spider veins to cause symptoms, such as aching, heaviness, itching and night cramps.
Spider veins may be isolated or associated with “feeder” veins, which is when they are associated with larger underlying varicose veins. If that is the case, the varicose veins or feeder vein should be treated prior to treatment of the spider veins. Click here if you also have varicose veins.
Certain factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including heredity, pregnancy, hormonal factors, weight gain, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing.
What are the treatments for Spider Veins?
A common form of treatment for spider veins is Sclerotherapy. Veins are injected with a solution, using small needles, which causes them to collapse and fade from view. The procedure typically improves not only the cosmetic appearance but the associated symptoms as well. A few sessions may be required to obtain maximum benefit. The procedure normally takes 5 to 30 minutes, depending on how many spider veins are treated. It is performed under local anesthetic so you will feel no pain during treatment.
Sclerotherapy at The Private Clinic is performed by some of the UK most qualified vascular surgeons.
Lasers may also be used to treat spider veins especially in case of small spider veins when a needle cannot be used. During laser treatment, intense light is directed to the veins, eliminating them permanently. Most patients experience a slight stinging sensation as the pulses of light energy are delivered through the hand piece. Although no local anaesthetic is usually required, some patients opt to use a topical anaesthetic prior to treatment.
The treatment taken between 15 and 30 minutes depending on the area treated. Often patients find that a course of 3 treatments are sufficient. However, the number of treatments necessary may vary depending on the number, colour, and size of the vessels being treated. Patients can resume normal activities immediately.
At The Private Clinic we only use the latest laser technology called CoolGlide which is suitable for all skin types. The CoolGlide laser treatment is performed by highly-trained nurse practitioners who all have extensive experience in this field.
