Before and After treatment

Restoring a clear, glowing complexion

Although not a dangerous condition, Melasma can be distressing for the sufferer and seriously undermine self-confidence. Particularly common in women between the ages of 20 and 40, Melasma causes brown patches to appear on the face.

As more and more sufferers are discovering, The Private Clinic now offers a safe and effective way to treat Melasma and restore clear, unblemished skin.

What is Melasma?

Melasma (also known as chloasma or the mask of pregnancy when present in pregnant women) is a skin condition which causes brown patches on the face . Both sides of the face are usually affected and most commonly the cheeks, bridge of nose, forehead, and upper lip.

Although it can affect anyone, Melasma is particularly common in women aged 20 to 40, especially pregnant women and those who are taking certain oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy medications.Only 10% of those affected are men.

Dark-skinned races, particularly Hispanics, Asians, Indians, people from the Middle East, and Northern Africa, tend to suffer form Melasma more than others.

Melasma does not cause any other symptoms beyond the cosmetic discoloration but may be of great cosmetic concern.

What are the causes of Melasma?

Melasma is most often caused by the hormonal changes or fluctuations of pregnancy, which make your skin more likely to develop dark patches of pigment when exposed to sunlight. However, Melasma can occur independently of pregnancy and can affect men.

Ultraviolet light from the sun, and even very strong light from light bulbs, can stimulate pigmentation.

People with coloured skin have more active melanocytes than those with light skin.

Genetic predisposition is also a major factor in determining whether someone will develop melasma. The incidence of melasma also increases in patients with thyroid disease.

Other rare causes of melasma include allergic reaction to medications and cosmetics.

What treatments do you offer?

The PIXEL Laser is a high-energy beam of light that can be directed into certain areas or tissues within the skin. It creates tiny ablative zones, removing the epidermis and upper dermis and triggering the body’s natural healing process. This stimulates the growth of new, healthy skin tissue.

Clinical and research studies have proved that PIXEL Laser treatments can significantly reduce excessive skin pigmentation.

What does the treatment involve?

The practitioner will apply a small hand piece to your skin which flashes a light on the areas to be treated. Unlike other laser treatments where the whole of the selected target area is damaged, the PIXEL Laser only treats small areas, leaving surrounding tissue untouched and intact. These large unaffected areas act as a reservoir for more effective and rapid tissue healing and collagen production.

You may be placed on a home care programme for two to three weeks prior to your first peel. This is important, as your skin may need to be prepared for the Pixel laser .

Does the treatment hurt?

There is minimal discomfort during the treatment.

Is it safe?

Yes, in the hands of experienced medical practitioners. At The Private Clinic we are highly experienced in the use of the Pixel Laser and also in the treatment of complex skin types.

How long does the treatment take?

Depending on the extent of the area to be treated, each session can take from a few minutes to half an hour.

How many treatments will I need?

Depending upon the severity and extent of the skin problem that is treated, a course of 3 to 5 treatments every three to four weeks is normally recommended.

How soon will I see results?

You will start seeing some results after the first session - however, the final results will be visible at the end of the course.

Are there any side effects?

Usually healing is quick with minimal downtime. For several hours afterwards the skin will feel tight and have the appearance of a “sunburned” look. The skin may continue to look “pinkish” for five to seven days and any swelling, which should be minimal, usually disappears after one to three days. As the skin heals itself, you will find mild to moderate skin flaking, which may last for up to two weeks.

How much does it cost?

PIXEL treatments start from £400 per session. However, the exact price can only be confirmed after your free consultation with our medical team.

Our mission is to offer the most advanced treatments at the most competitive prices - we aim to deliver a Harley Street service at High Street prices.

Who performs the treatment?

Our treatments are carried out by doctors and senior nurses who each have extensive experience in the field.

As well as being qualified to administer treatments, they are also able to advise on the best course of treatment for you.
