What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis affects up to 3% of the population and in many cases can be treated. However only 5% of them think to contact a medical professional for help.
Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating. Sweating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat – people with Hyperhidrosis produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature.
There are two main types of Hyperhidrosis:
- Focal Hyperhidrosis is the more common type involving excessive sweating on the feet, hands and the under-arms.
- Generalised Hyperhidrosis affects the whole body, It is much less common and is usually caused by another illness such as an infection, diabetes or when the thyroid gland is overactive.
Here at The Private Clinic, we treat underarm sweating using Botulinum Toxin.
In 2004, the FDA approved Botox for the treatment of hyperhidrosis
How does the treatment work?
Botulinum Toxin A is a chemical produced by the Clostridium bacteria. BTX-A is a protein derivative of the toxin, which when injected into a muscle causes it to become weakened or inactivated.
Small quantities of BTX-A are injected into the skin of the affected area. This blocks the action of the nerves that supply the eccrine glands and stops them producing sweat.
Which areas can be treated?
The underarms
Does the injection hurt?
Because the needle is so fine and such small substance quantities are used, the pain is minimal. No sedation or local anaesthesia is required. You may experience some itching over the treated area immediately after treatment.
How long does the treatment take?
Treatment takes about 30 minutes, and you can resume normal activities immediately.
How soon will I see results?
On average, you will notice a reduction in sweating three to seven days after the treatment.
How long will the effects last?
Most people notice a slow return to sweating approximately eight to nine months following treatment but it is not uncommon to get 11-12 months of relief. The procedure can then be repeated.
Are there any side effects?
Botox® injections have been used safely and effectively for over ten years to treat many neurological disorders. Each year thousands of patients receive Botox® treatments for a variety of conditions and it has quickly became a popular treatment for reversing the visible signs of ageing.
It is injected in such small quantity that is not harmful. The most common side effects are temporary and localised bruising, slight redness of the skin and occasionally slight swelling at the injection site. These side effects correct themselves as the Botox wears off.
Is there any downtime?
No, you can resume normal activities immediately.
How much does it cost?
The consultation is free and the treatment itself costs £600.
Who performs the treatment?
Our treatments are carried out by doctors who have extensive experience in this field.
