Photorejuvenation, the latest in hi-tech, light-based skin care treatments, uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to break up pigment and haemoglobin in the skin so that age spots and broken capillaries disappear.
The heat from light is also said to travel to the deeper layers of the skin, boosting collagen and so lessening fine lines.
Costs from £295 per treatment – a course of five (£1,295) is recommended. Kerry was treated by Roisin McGovern at the Private Clinic, Harley Street, London (020 7725 0894).
Kerry’s details
Age:29
Job: cocktail waitress
Skin sins: loves the sun, works in a smoky environment, eats erratically due to the job.
Skin savers: has regular no-nonsense skincare routine, drinks lots of water, eats fresh fruit and takes a daily multivitamin.
She says:’I'm a real sun worshipper and have spent eight years travelling abroad. I have tough skin and never get spots but noticed that my skin’s become very pigmented over recent years. These darker patches don’t fade, even after my tan’s gone’.
VERDICT
‘When I knew I was going to have a light treatment to get rid of my pigmentation I was a bit nervous. I’m very squeamish and nearly fainted when the treatment started, but it didn’t actually hurt at all. A machine with a head that pulses light was passed over my skin a small section at a time.
As the light flashed I felt little pin pricks and intense heat. All in all it took 15 minutes to do my face, and afterwards it felt hot and looked healthy, pink and plump. I was cooled with aloe vera gel before leaving. That night I went to work and no one was any the wiser.
Within two days the pigmentation marks had gone darker and then they slowly disappeared. They faded by about a third after one treatment and I was really pleased.
