Acids … bone minerals … soya beans: these amazing new injections promise to take years off your face.
Statistics claim that 150,000 syringes of cosmetic products are injected every year in the UK.
In America, only eight fillers are approved for cosmetic use, but here there are 55 different products – mostly unlicensed – available.
CORRIE JACKSON investigates some of the most common injectables on the British market.
BOTOX
Licensed for cosmetic use on frown lines only
INGREDIENTS:
Botuline Intoxine A – minute quantities of a toxin that reversibly weakens the muscles.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Fills in crow’s feet, frown lines. Skilled practitioners can inject Botox in palms, feet and under the arms to prevent sweating. Used by neurologists for 20 years and was licensed in Britain to help people with facial tics, by paralysing the muscle.
PROS:
Approved by the strict American Food and Drug Association (FDA). Botox makes fillers last longer because it freezes the muscle that’s causing the lines to worsen.
CONS:
Lasts only three months in facial lines. Side effects: droopy eyes, mild headaches and bruising.
COST:
From £200 for facial lines, £500 to prevent sweating.
WHO’S HAD IT DONE?
Diana Towler, 49, who is a doctor, says: ‘I was looking tired and haggard and the lines on my forehead were more noticeable. Having the treatment was no more painful than having my eyebrows plucked. It took about two weeks to see the full effects. I love it. It looks so subtle and natural.’
