Knife-free beauty boosters

Media Reviews

If you think celebs are naturally blessed with size 10 trim, toned, cellulite-free bods and peachy-perfect complexions, think again.

We’ve uncovered the latest clinical and beauty salon treatments that celebs use to put the brakes on Mother Nature’s body clock.

Clinic treatments
Facelifts are a drastic solution to the ageing process, but you can opt for a knife-free nip and tuck with a less invasive facial procedure.

Deep, static lines: Restylane and Perlane
The hype. A quick, safe, biodegradable injection that adds volume where your body’s lost it. Perfect for smokers’ lines, cheek enhancement and to soften wrinkles.

Wendy’s verdict. ‘The bestselling fillers in the world, these break down over time as they’re made from biodegradable hyaluronic acid. Restylane is great for lips and lines and Perlane is thicker, so it’s useful for contours, cheeks, hollows and when lips need extra plumping. They both last around six to nine months’.

Forehead wrinkles, crow’s-feet: Botox
The hype. Botox smoothes expression lines, frown lines and forehead lines. Injected into the muscle, the effect becomes visible after seven to 10 days. Lisa Stanfield and Lulu
are both fans of this treatment.

Wendy’s verdict. ‘Perhaps the most popular beauty injection in Britain, Botulinum Toxin Type A lasts for about four to six months and works particularly well for crow’s feet, forehead creases and tweaking eyebrows up. Botox is also used for neck wrinkles.’

Facial hollows, sunken cheeks: Sculptra
The hype. Injected into ageing skin that looks gaunt or saggy, this substance stimulates collagen production and can plump out hollows or chisel and enhance cheekbones. It’s also good for acne scarring. Three to four treatments are required and the effects last up to two years.

Wendy’s verdict. ‘This filler’s injected deeply to add volume to areas that need plumping. Great for slim faces and runners who have very little facial fat.’

Fat busting: Mesotherapy
The hype. A combination of fat-fighting homeopathic ingredients and vitamin C is injected into the middle layer of the skin to break down cellulite and improve circulation and lymphatic drainage. People have lost up to 2cm from their tigh-circumferences after just six sessions. A course of eight sessions is recommended.

Wendy’s verdict. ‘A controversial method of injecting drugs, fluids and vitamins into the skin, it has been used for cellulite, dimpling and wrinkles, but has received mixed reviews. Some forms, such as Restylane Vital, are also used for rejuvenation of the face, chest and hands.’

Beauty treatments
Unsure about having injections? Then why not go for something a little more relaxing and less invasive – a course of these hi-tech facials can still transform your complexion.

Sun damage, age spots, wrinkles: Micro Peel
Who’s a fan. Lisa Butcher

The results. Too many holidays in the sun? This skin rejuvenating combination of a mild glycolic peel and microdermabrasion (gentle abrasion with crystals to remove the dead, dulling cells from the upper layer of skin) works wonders on prematurely ageing complexions. The glycolic acid loosens all the debris from the pores and skin, while the microdermabrasion thoroughly sweeps away all the loose, dulling cells, leaving you with healthy, vibrant skin.

Prematurely ageing, dull skin: Resurfacing Skin
Who’s a fan. Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz

The results. Thanks to a lower pH than other peels, the Resurfacing Skin Peel is great for sun-damaged or sensitive skin. It’s been designed to help combat signs of ageing by improving skin texture and tone and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The resurfacing will transform your tired, dull complexion into a more radiant, glowing one.

Acne, sun-damaged skin: NLite
Who’s a fan. Gillian Taylforth

The results. Non-invasive and surprisingly relaxing, this laser light treatment takes 30 minutes. It increases natural collagen production by around 85 per cent and reduces wrinkles by around 53 per cent. The results? A plumper, fresher-looking complexion which should last around two years. It also works wonders on acne – people should see a 50 per cent reduction in spots after two weeks.
