Is Botox Good or Bad? We Answer Your Questions about the Cosmetic & Medical Uses of Botox

Friday, May 24th, 2013

Botox has lots of medical uses as well as its most famous cosmetic use to treat lines and wrinkles. When administered correctly Botox treatments offer a great and sustainable way to ensure you manage and avoid those bothersome deep lines and wrinkles.

In response to the questions we get asked by patients, we thought we would put together a blog post all about the various uses of Botox and some of the most common questions we get asked to help you better understand why Botox can be good.

Cosmetic Botox to the Face for Women

What are the cosmetic uses of Botox?

Our Botox treatments to the face and neck can help target problem areas like:

  • Forehead
  • Frown Lines
  • Crow’s Feet & Under the Eyes
  • The Nose Area  / Bunny Lines
  • Jaw line
  • Chin
  • Neck

We use Dermal Fillers for problem areas around the mouth like:

  • Above Lips
  • Smoker’s Lines
  • Corners of Mouth

What are the medical uses of Botox?

The medical uses of Botox include (to varying degrees of success and popularity):

  • Blepharospasm (excessive blinking)
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Migraine and other headache disorders
  • Incontinence
  • Anal fissure
  • Vaginismus to reduce the spasm of the vaginal muscles
  • Trauma, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and cerebral palsy
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Wound healing
  • Excessive salivation
  • Vocal cord  dysfunction
  • Painful bladder syndrome

John Mayer, a famous singer from the US, has been treated with Botox for vocal cord dysfunction.

How often should I have Botox?

Your doctor or nurse at The Private Clinic will work with you to decide the best course of treatment in order to maintain natural-looking results. It may be the case that you can extend the gaps between treatments and still maintain your desired look. For younger patients, this may be especially important. Some patients have treatments annually. You can discuss this in more detail at a consultation.

Who should I choose for my Botox treatments?

Botox should be administered carefully in a controlled clinical environment by experienced professionals. With experienced and fully qualified practitioners you are in the safest hands possible. Here at The Private Clinic we only work with qualified and experienced doctors and nurses for our cosmetic Botox treatments as we take patient care very seriously, putting your care before everything else.

A good doctor or clinic will inform you about how you can achieve natural looking, sustainable results. That is why it is so important to choose an experienced practitioner and not let your decision be based on cost alone.

Botox has definitely benefited people. Like with lots of things in life, it’s about moderation when it comes to using Botox for cosmetic reasons. Finding a clinic and medical team you can trust to work in your best interests can be a challenge.

Is Botox safe?

Used correctly it won’t damage your body. The effects are temporary on the muscles but overuse of Botox will cause problems for the muscles. That is why it’s very important to choose experienced and qualified practitioners.

Allegan, the manufacturer behind Botox, points out that there has not been a single fatality related to its cosmetic use.

The ‘Free’ Consultation – Why Some Places Charge and Others Don’t

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Industry bodies have recently raised concerns over excessive advertising of clinics offering free consultations to see surgeons and doctors in the Cosmetic industry. Advertising free consultations for surgical procedures, as part of an incentive, is considered a hard selling technique and many would like to see tighter controls to protect the public. We wanted to respond to the questions out there about free consultations and our ethical and sustainable approach to consultations.

Cosmetic Procedures & Free Consultations

The ‘Free’ Consultation?

Full free consultations offer an irresistible pull to many people looking at cosmetic treatments. Free consultations are popular. It’s natural to want to explore options and many people will go to more than one consultation before deciding on the procedure and the practitioner. Cosmetic treatments should be carefully researched and these meetings can help you gather the information you need to help understand the procedure and to see if you really want it, and more importantly, if you’re suitable for it. We all like to feel like we’re saving money but you need to approach with a sensible dose of caution.

Why Do Some Places Charge?

  • Paid consultations involve detailed examinations by Doctors or Surgeons, and where appropriate a medical diagnosis. It is not simply an assessment by a sales person.
  • At reputable clinics, you could be seeing world-renowned doctors and surgeons – worth a consultation fee, which for many consultations is refunded upon arrival at the consultation.
  • Your body deserves the proper expertise and experience with the right amount of aftercare – something cut price clinics offering full free consultations might not offer.
  • From experience, free consultations result in more people not turning up, which is costly and time-consuming for the doctors and surgeons.
  • It makes sense to try out free consultations to get a feel of what the procedure involves. However don’t let this completely determine your choice. Always consider a range of clinics.
  • We only charge a consultation fee only for diagnostic consultations for medical treatments, like varicose veins, snoring and hair transplants, with a specialist.
  • We offer fully refundable deposits for many of our consultations upon arrival at the clinic for your consultation.

Why Pay When You Don’t Have To?

  • Free consultations allow people to explore but to what extent? The free consultation will not be free eventually. At some point along the treatment process, the costs involved in seeing many more people than who choose the clinic for free (clinic and staff costs) will become apparent.
  • As each clinic will be looking for a way to appeal, some clinics choose completely free consultations as a way to get people through their door and signed up. Being cautious really pays off in this industry, which needs more regulation. It is useful to always remember if it sounds too good to be true, it often will be, especially in the Cosmetic Industry.

The Private Clinic & Our Responsibility

We’re here to make everyone more knowledgeable of cosmetic procedures and treatments, in the hope that our openness and honesty is rewarded in time. Many people, including us at this clinic, feel the industry lacks proper regulation to protect patients and clinics from bad practitioners. We would like to see stricter controls in place to protect the patient from signing anything before they are ready.

The Private Clinic

Here at The Private Clinic we offer:

  • Refundable deposits for most of our full consultations with a doctor or surgeon, which are fully refunded once you arrive for your consultation.
  • Opportunities to come to our clinics and chat to our staff about procedures. Trust is always important so we will let you know in advance who you can see.
  • Alternatively you can always call or email us with your questions and to make a booking.

We have some of the best doctors and surgeons in the world and, as such, our consultations offer patients an unparalleled opportunity to seek the utmost professional advice. Our costs reflect the level of care we afford all our patients long before and after any procedure. We are upfront with our costs and there will be no surprises along the way.

If you have any questions you can always call or email us and we can do our best to help you understand the procedure in question before you commit to a consultation.

Are Women Snoring More? We Respond to the Press

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

It is thought that snoring affects around 3.5 million people in the UK. With obesity rates stubbornly high and rising, as well as the influence alcohol intake and smoking has over snoring, we are seeing more and more women coming to our clinics to tackle their snoring once and for all. How much this can be attributed to the causal factors or just rising awareness is a hot topic for discussion in the industry. We share our experience of treating patients to discuss if more women are snoring or not.

snoring

Are more women snoring?

It’s not something a survey can answer. As obesity rates continue to rise and extra weight has an influence over snoring for lots of people, it is not unexpected that people are linking it with recent reports that more women are coming to clinics to stop their snoring. However, we must always be careful in making associations between potential causes and effects. More women are coming to The Private Clinic (fifteen times as many appointments for women in their twenties and thirties were made in 2012, as in 2010) but the reasons behind it are not fully explainable. Our Dr. Myles Black partly attributes this rise in women becoming more aware of treatments and frustration at over the counter methods that don’t offer comfortable, long-term results.

As a recent survey from the Travelodge revealed, snoring is the second biggest cause of arguments for couples, after fidgeting. Such a result is just one indication of what we experience with our patients. Many come to the consultation with their partner, as it very much a procedure that benefits sleeping partners. There are a number of over the counter options available but many patients report that these haven’t offered the long-term and hassle-free solution they need. A trip to your GP is the best first move to make, as they deal with your health in general over the long term. From there, consider looking into calling us or booking a consultation to get to grips with the details of our snoring treatments, like time taken from consultation to procedure, for example.

What causes snoring?

Obesity, sedatives, smoking and alcohol are some of the main factors involved that put you at increased risk of snoring. In themselves they do not result in snoring, as snoring is caused by vibrations of the soft tissue in your head and neck. While we are asleep, our airways narrow and relax, affecting the air pressure – resulting in the vibration of the soft tissue in snorers that can have an impact on the quality of your health and relationships.

What causes snoring

Snoring treatments will depend on how you snore. Your snoring could be the result of vibration of the nasal passages, soft palate, base of your tongue, tonsils or uvula. A full consultation will help to determine how we could help and to better understand how you snore and why.

The Private Clinic

It’s not easy to work out if more women are snoring but it’s certainly interesting to think about it and why more and more people are seeking treatments from our leading medical team. We have lots more information available on our website and on the rest of the blog about snoring and how we could help: http://www.theprivateclinic.co.uk/treatments/snoring/

Fat Transfer: The Latest Weapon in the fight against Ageing

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

A recent news story, featured in The Sunday Times last week, looked at a facial volume enhancing technique, currently being trialled in Belgium that uses stem cells in fat (adipose) tissue to selectively restore lost volume to the face, as a result of ageing. So far, it remains a trial – exactly what the stem cells are doing is unknown – if anything at all – but it is certainly an interesting trial. So while trials are the lifeblood of medicine, here at The Private Clinic our experienced team carry out fat transfer procedures utilising the latest proven techniques and technology. As a result, we wanted to share with you how we do the procedures and offer advice.

As you age, you lose fatty tissue from parts of the body that are hard to hide – most noticeably the face – and gain fat on the areas you’d like to keep it off. The skin on the face is a battleground against the elements and as you age your skin also loses elasticity, dropping downwards, exacerbating the effects of lost fat volume – evident in sagging jowls and nasolabial folds. As many struggle to shift pockets of fat in other parts of your body, science and medical know-how have stepped up and you can now have unwanted fat taken from stubborn fat deposits, around the abdomen for example, and transfer it to the ‘not-so-plump’ areas.

Fat transfer procedures typically involve taking unwanted fat from the patient’s body via liposuction (we do it here with VASER Liposuction), filtering it and transferring it to the site required by injection. This requires specific knowledge and experience to transfer effectively, without damaging the fat cells and to limit bruising. The face requires even further consideration. Here at The Private Clinic, as our very own Dr. Dennis Wolf points out, “the cannulas I use are finer than traditional fat infiltration cannulas, causing less bruising and trauma to surrounding tissue.” Make sure you ask about this, as bruising to the face is largely avoidable with an experienced doctor or surgeon.

Before and After

It is important to note that with breast enlargement via fat transfer the VASER liposuction performed will have a noticeable result on the donor area, due to the volume needed, and forms an important part of the procedure. However as less fat is required for the face, for example, the removal of fat for the ‘Organic Lift’ results in less noticeable fat loss (contouring) around the donor area, unless in combination with full VASER liposuction. The primary objective of this procedure is the added volume to the ‘problem’ area, which has been receiving very positive responses from patients.

The Private Clinic

It has never been safer and more effective and with The Private Clinic’s experienced doctors and practitioners, we are at the forefront of the technology and techniques involved. We offer fat transfer procedures for the face (The Organic Lift), hands, buttocks and breasts. For more information about our clinic’s procedures and to book a consultation, please see our website: http://www.theprivateclinic.co.uk/

Is your workout ageing you?

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Is your workout ageing you?

As we get older, many of us find that we have to work that little bit harder to achieve the body that we desire. However, whilst years of running, weight training, cycling and careful dieting may enable us to possess the body of a twenty-something long past after 40th birthdays, do our faces pay the price…?

An intense exercise regime may be integral to keeping your curves in check, but exercise – like anything done to excess, has the potential to age you…

Is running a fast track to wrinkles?

Leading US cosmetic surgeon Stephen Mulholland recently revealed that 25% of his clients were runners seeking to combat their ‘runner’s face’, believing that years of pavement pounding were the ‘route’ cause of their wrinkles. Whilst there is little scientific evidence to support this theory, it is a notion supported by New York cosmetic surgeon Gerald Imber, who cited running as the biggest cause of premature wrinkles after drinking and smoking.

However, a recent German study found that it is actually the free radical damage from an increased intake of oxygen that contributes to ageing, rather than the impact from the actual activity. After prolonged exercise, such as a 25-mile run, the body changes its metabolism with a resulting increase in free radicals – atoms that can cause damage to your cells and speed up the ageing process. However the study found that it takes very strenuous exercise to increase cell damage, so jogging a few times a week isn’t going to create a noticeable impact on the tautness of your skin.

The area of the body most susceptible to sagging as a result of running is the breasts, as it causes the ligaments here to stretch. Whilst sports bras can reduce the impact that such activities can have on the breasts, some women opt to undergo a breast lift to achieve a more youthful breast contour.

Don’t run the risk…

People who exercise outdoors are likely to be more susceptible to ageing than those who favour the gym, as many will fail to protect their skin against sun damage. This can cause an array of skin problems, from age spots to premature wrinkling. If you’ve failed to protect your skin during outdoor workouts in the past, it’s never too late to implement changes. However, if you’ve been left with wrinkles as a result of damage caused in your younger years, we have a range of excellent treatments specifically designed to target premature ageing. Chemical peels and Botox can help reverse signs of ageing, enabling you to look as youthful on the inside as you feel on the outside.

Six ways to make your Facelift last longer

Friday, February 15th, 2013

Ozzy Osbourne

Looking at photos of Ozzy Osbourne that have surfaced in the press this week, it’s hard to believe that he’s already had a career in music spanning over 40 years. His youthful appearance defies his 64 years, leading many to speculate that he may have had some cosmetic assistance.

However, if this is the case – it’s unlikely that he’d deny it. Both him and his wife Sharon have openly discussed their love of plastic surgery, with his wife admitting to have spent over £120,000 on procedures in the past. In 2005, Ozzy revealed that he had undergone both a facelift and rhinoplasty, saying “I’ve had a facejob and a rhinoplasty – it boosted my confidence no end. My philosophy is that if, when you look in the mirror, all you can see is the double chin or the big nose, and it makes your life easier to have them cut off, do it.”

Judging from the smoothness of Ozzy’s skin in these latest pictures, it appears that the Black Sabbath front man may well have had some more work done. Many people will opt for facial fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm as a non-invasive means of maintaining ‘natural looking’ youth compared to the dramatic effect of facelift.

If you have had a facelift here are our Top 6 tips to making your facelift last longer:

  • Protect your skin against sun damage

This step is essential. To effectively protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays, experts recommend using sun block with an SPF of 30 or 40 daily.

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Exercise, hydration and a healthy diet will go a long way to maintaining the effects of your facelift over time. Smoking and fluctuations in weight will have a negative impact on the effects of your facelift and should be avoided.

  • Enhance with injectables

Refreshing the results of a facelift with injectable fillers is becoming an increasingly popular option. Dermal fillers such as Resylane and Juvederm can improve the appearance of wrinkles in areas of the face that a traditional facelift doesn’t touch.

  • Refresh with an Intracel treatment

Intracel is a state of the art treatment that uses radio frequency and dermal needling to tighten skin immediately while gradually stimulating collagen production, offering long-term benefits that complement those of a facelift.

  • Treat with laser resurfacing

Laser resurfacing treatments refresh the skin, reduce wrinkles, improve skin texture and tone and encourage the formation of new collagen.

  • Use professional skincare products

Professional FDA approved skincare products penetrate deeply to create proven improvements in the appearance of the skin that can’t be achieved with over the counter products. Contact your physician for more information.

Botox for depression

Botox for Depression

The late American actress Phyllis Diller once said ‘A smile is a curve that sets everything straight’. Whilst it’s unlikely that Miss Diller was aware of any medical evidence to support such a claim, research just published suggests that she could have been right.

A recent study carried out by Eric Finzi, medical director at The Chevy Chase Cosmetic Centre in Maryland, found that using Botox to combat frown lines reduced the symptoms of severe depression in more than a quarter of his patients.

Finzi found that through injecting Botox to prevent frowning, the toxin is interrupting signals in the brain that indicate that the body is under stress or cannot cope. According to Finzi, “the brain registers what the face is doing – it’s like an emotional thermometer. If you’re laughing, the brain will think, oh let’s decrease the stress hormones. With negative feedback such as frowning, it will think more pessimistically.”

If you are considering having Botox to smooth out your wrinkles, the most important consideration for you should be your safety, the expertise of your practitioner and the products being used. Choosing a highly qualified practitioner is key to achieving the best possible results.

Here at The Private Clinic, you can rest assured that you will be treated by a registered, experienced and qualified practitioner, using the highest quality of approved products. We only offer tried and tested, fully approved medical products, produced worldwide, and all of our injectable treatments are carried out by cosmetic doctors or nurse prescribers, who have undergone extensive additional training to qualify in prescribing Botox.

Demand for Anti-ageing Cosmetic Treatments Soars in the UK

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Recently published figures from BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) show a 0.2% increase in the UK over the last 12 months. Plastic Surgery procedures as a whole saw double-digit increases in 2012, with Facial Rejuvenation treatments (Eyelid surgery and Brow lifts) and Fat Transfer procedures, experiencing the largest growth.

Demand for Anti-Aging Cosmetic Treatments Soar

Despite growing concerns around the PIP Breast Implants scandal, Boob Jobs have still remained the most popular cosmetic treatment in the UK, with 9,843 procedures having taken place in 2012.

The top performing Facial age-defying treatments for women in 2012 were:

Eyelid Surgery

• Face/Neck Lifts

• Brow Lifts

Popular surgical treatments amongst men included:

Rhinoplasty

• Eyelid Surgery

Breast Reduction

Similar to the top ranking female procedures, Face/Neck lifts, Fat Transfer and Brow lifts saw the highest increases in male procedures.

Along with growing popularity of anti-ageing treatments, figures show that people are looking for more natural and non-surgical treatments – with Fat Transfer procedures, which we are specialists in, having seen a massive 14% increase.

The number of men and women transferring fat from one body part, such as thighs, buttocks or abdomen, to areas that have lost volume through ageing, such as the face or hands, has become increasingly popular. Fat Transfer offers a natural, long-term, volume enhancing solution, which ends up being more economical and safer than synthetic fillers.

Read more about it here.

Dr Alberto Di Giuseppe: Twitter Q&A

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

Last week we held a live Twitter web chat with plastic surgeon, Dr Alberto Di Giuseppe, who took to The Private Clinic Twitter feed to answer your questions about Liposuction, Breast Enhancement procedures using Fat Transfer and Plastic Surgery in general.

Dr Di Giuseppe

Before the Q&A session had even started, Dr Di Giuseppe was inundated with a variety of questions from the floor – we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sent in a question for Dr Di Giuseppe to answer!

About Dr Alberto Di Giuseppe

Dr Alberto Di Giuseppe is a world renowned plastic surgeon, who has led the field in Liposuction techniques and helped to develop the newest treatments to enhance breast shape and size using fat transfer, also known as Fat Grafting. He has co-edited four books on Lipoplasty and is considered to be a world leader in ultra-sound assisted Lipo techniques.

Dr Di Giuseppe has recently appeared in the Mail Online, having performed what we call an ‘Organic Facelift’ on 57 year old, Rosetta Citton, which saw fat being harvested from Rosetta’s thighs via VASER Liposuction and re-injected into her face as a natural volume-enhancing filler. In case you missed the article, you can read all about the procedure here.

A full transcript of the Q&A session is available below – should you have any additional questions for Dr Di Giuseppe, be sure to leave them in the comment section of this blog post and we will put them to the Doctor on your behalf.
