Botox: how young is too young?

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

Over the last few years, there has been a steep rise in the number of 20-somethings turning to Botox as a means of attaining eternal youth.

Last year, it was reported that there had been a 56% year on year rise in enquiries for the wrinkle-smoothing medication amongst 18-25 year olds. Increased demand is being attributed to the popularity of programmes such as The Only Way is Essex, whilst celebrities such as Megan Fox, Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan are all believed to have opted for Botox before the age of 30. Kim Kardashian was even shown having the injections on her reality show, Keeping up with The Kardashians.

The endorsed use of Botox by women so young only reinforces the notion that older women need to stay looking young in order to be valued in society. However, it’s not just the celebrities who are opting to start young in a bid to beat the wrinkles…

But can Botox really help you stop the clock?

botox-in-twenties

Whether it’s worthwhile – or effective – to have your facial features frozen at such a young age remains open to debate. Many have argued that starting early does enable you to keep the wrinkles at bay, as when a patient is older they are using Botox to treat the wrinkles, whereas younger patients are using it to prevent them occurring.

However, at The Private Clinic, our very own Dermatology specialist, Dr. Puneet Gupta, advises anyone under the age of 30 to consult with a medical practitioner prior to starting Botox treatment.

“Botox should only be used to treat deep creases and grooves in the skin, not dynamic wrinkles, which result from facial animation.”

Demand for Anti-ageing Cosmetic Treatments Soars in the UK

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Recently published figures from BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) show a 0.2% increase in the UK over the last 12 months. Plastic Surgery procedures as a whole saw double-digit increases in 2012, with Facial Rejuvenation treatments (Eyelid surgery and Brow lifts) and Fat Transfer procedures, experiencing the largest growth.

Demand for Anti-Aging Cosmetic Treatments Soar

Despite growing concerns around the PIP Breast Implants scandal, Boob Jobs have still remained the most popular cosmetic treatment in the UK, with 9,843 procedures having taken place in 2012.

The top performing Facial age-defying treatments for women in 2012 were:

Eyelid Surgery

• Face/Neck Lifts

• Brow Lifts

Popular surgical treatments amongst men included:

Rhinoplasty

• Eyelid Surgery

Breast Reduction

Similar to the top ranking female procedures, Face/Neck lifts, Fat Transfer and Brow lifts saw the highest increases in male procedures.

Along with growing popularity of anti-ageing treatments, figures show that people are looking for more natural and non-surgical treatments – with Fat Transfer procedures, which we are specialists in, having seen a massive 14% increase.

The number of men and women transferring fat from one body part, such as thighs, buttocks or abdomen, to areas that have lost volume through ageing, such as the face or hands, has become increasingly popular. Fat Transfer offers a natural, long-term, volume enhancing solution, which ends up being more economical and safer than synthetic fillers.

Dr Alberto Di Giuseppe: Twitter Q&A

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

Last week we held a live Twitter web chat with plastic surgeon, Dr Alberto Di Giuseppe, who took to The Private Clinic Twitter feed to answer your questions about Liposuction, Breast Enhancement procedures using Fat Transfer and Plastic Surgery in general.

Dr Di Giuseppe

Before the Q&A session had even started, Dr Di Giuseppe was inundated with a variety of questions from the floor – we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sent in a question for Dr Di Giuseppe to answer!

About Dr Alberto Di Giuseppe

Dr Alberto Di Giuseppe is a world renowned plastic surgeon, who has led the field in Liposuction techniques and helped to develop the newest treatments to enhance breast shape and size using fat transfer, also known as Fat Grafting. He has co-edited four books on Lipoplasty and is considered to be a world leader in ultra-sound assisted Lipo techniques.

Dr Di Giuseppe has recently appeared in the Mail Online, having performed what we call an ‘Organic Facelift’ on 57 year old, Rosetta Citton, which saw fat being harvested from Rosetta’s thighs via VASER Liposuction and re-injected into her face as a natural volume-enhancing filler. In case you missed the article, you can read all about the procedure here.

A full transcript of the Q&A session is available below – should you have any additional questions for Dr Di Giuseppe, be sure to leave them in the comment section of this blog post and we will put them to the Doctor on your behalf.

Introductory Tweets

Hello, I’m Dr Di Giuseppe and I’m here to take your general #PlasticSurgery questions #TPCPlasticSurgery

You can submit your questions and follow the conversation using the #TPCPlasticSurgery hashtag

So to begin.. #TPCPlasticSurgery

Questions:

Shelley asks: Do you perform fat transfer to the buttocks using fat from the #ankles, calves and inner #thighs? #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Shelley, we take #fat from all the areas where there is a sufficient amount #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: The goal of the procedure is to #sculpt the body and give shape #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Flanks and #abdomen are the other two areas more often utilised for their #fat, as well as the #thighs #TPCPlasticSurgery

@LauraThomas89 asks: Why does a #boob reduction leave such extensive #scarring when a boob job leaves hardly anything?#TPCPlasticSurgery

A: @laurathomas89, Depending on the position of the #breast you need to take extra skin out #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Depending on #shape and position of the #nipple area, you can have a #periareola scar or periareola vertical scar #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: ..with this kind of scar you can probably solve 98% of breast reduction #TPCPlasticSurgery

@LauraThomas89 asks: I’ve heard that the belly button is a tell-tale sign that someone’s had #lipo – is this true? #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: .@LauraThomas89 I would describe #liposuction as too aggressive if detectable by the #belly button #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: You must respect the #anatomy and the natural shape of the body – or this can look unnatural #TPCPlasticSurgery

Diva asks: I’m interested in a #boob job with fat transfer. What percentage of people’s bodies reject the #fat transfer? #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Diva, There is no #fat rejection, because it is your own fat #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: What you would need to factor is the percentage of #fat which stays viable, which is between 70 and 85% #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: It is very important that you maintain your own weight for this to remain stable #TPCPlasticSurgery

Diva asks: How much #fat do you need to transfer for a #BreastEnhancement procedure? Wondering if I have enough.. #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Diva, everybody has a certain amount of #fat which can be taken. It takes 400ml of fat to increase one cup size #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: I would need to see you in person first to offer a more accurate answer #TPCPlasticSurgery

Hayley asks: Hi Dr, is it possible to have a #cosmetic #surgery procedure that gives you #dimples? Thanks. #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Hayley, yes, the procedure involves the removal of #bichat fat pad, which would be removed with an #oral incision #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: In the long term this procedure may result in #wrinkles #TPCPlasticSurgery

.@BeautyGeekUK asks: I’d like to know what are the best treatments for post #acne #scarring if money is no object please? #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: @BeautyGeekUK, The best treatment for post #acne #scarring is #laser, #chemical peel or #dermabrasion #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: These procedures remove the superficial layer of the #skin which includes the #scar & promotes the healing of new #skin #TPCPlasticSurgery

Laura Ann asks: How big do you have to be to have #liposuction TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Laura Ann, #liposuction is not a treatment for #weight loss or #obesity #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: #Lipo is an operation for #sculpting the body, which is different #TPCPlasticSurgery

Laura Ann asks: What’s the most popular #boobjob size? #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Laura Ann, the most popular cup is between a C and a D, but this is on top of what you already have #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: If you have an A cup and have this #procedure, you will have between a C and a D cup #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Ten years ago it was between a B and a C cup #TPCPlasticSurgery

Laura Ann asks: What is the #recovery period for getting your #ears pinned back? Do you have to wear a bandage? #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Laura Ann, yes you need to wear a #bandage for 24 hours, then we use a headband to keep everything in place #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: The recovery period for having your #ears pinned back is about 10 days #TPCPlasticSurgery

.@LauraWheat asks: My mum wants to ask if you can remove colourless #FacialMoles without #scarring? #TPCPlasticSurgery

.@LauraWheat asks: Also treatments for #facial spots! #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: @LauraWheat, you can’t guarantee that there will not be any #scarring #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: Depending on what the #AgeSpot is like, will determine the treatment #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: For brown #AgeSpots we will use a #pulsed light source #TPCPlasticSurgery

.@fatgirlinlycra asks: With recent #implant issues, how are #plastic #surgeons insuring ones undertaken now are safe? #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: @fatgirlinlycra, Apart from the #PIP #implants, all other implants are done properly #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: All the French brands actually offer life warranty on the quality of #implants #TPCPlasticSurgery

.@BeautyGeekUK asks: Can I ask which #lasers or #peels you think are most effective specifically for post #acne scarring? #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: @beautygeekuk, The most effective #laser for #acne scarring is #Co2 #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: The best peel is #Phenol, which is normally used in combination with other ingredients #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: @Fighting_Fifty, there is no #skin preparation prior to #surgery for body treatment #TPCPlasticSurgery

A: If the patient is very #overweight, I would advise that they lose a few pounds prior to the treatment #TPCPlasticSurgery

Say bye-bye to false eyelashes

Friday, December 21st, 2012

Healthcare company Allergan have thought of it all – having developed Latisse, ‘a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis (inadequate or not enough eyelashes) to grow eyelashes longer, fuller and darker’, they are looking to release the treatment in the UK. The product is currently being tested by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.

Byebye to false eyelashes

Latisse is the first scientific-based eyelash treatment to be approved by the FDA in 2008, and has since seen growing success and popularity. It is a prescribed medication in liquid form, and is applied to the base of the upper eyelashes with a disposable applicator. Since the launch of Latisse, proven results show that eyelashes can become darker, longer and fuller within 8 weeks of usage, with the full results kicking in at about 16 weeks.

With recent news of its upcoming UK release, there has been some speculation regarding the efficacy and side effects of Allergan’s Latisse eyelash treatment. The treatment was first discovered when its main ingredient Bimatoprost, traditionally used to control the progression of Glaucoma, notably increased eyelash volume, length and thickness as a side effect.

After seeing the effects of Bimatoprost, Allergan have included the ingredient as 0.03% of Latisse’s composition. There are very minimal side effects to this topical treatment, which can be minimised by applying the ointment correctly – reports have shown that the use of Latisse may cause darkening of the eyelid skin, which may be reversible, and although not reported in any clinical studies, use of the ointment may increase brown pigmentation of the coloured part of the eye.

So, overall good news for UK women – and some advice: get rid of the false one, and grow your own eyelashes.

Six Packs Are In! Strong Is The New Skinny!

Friday, December 14th, 2012

To the ladies chasing the latest celebrity body trends…have no fear…you can eat again!

The word on the grapevine is ‘strong is the new skinny’, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. For too long we have been waiting for the celebs to see sense and opt for a healthier lifestyle.

Gone are the days when it was the ‘in’ thing to aspire for teeny tiny tummies matchstick legs, now sensible women are shunning size zero frames in favour of tightly packed abs and well-toned arms.

The happy and healthy stars of the big screen, catwalk and tennis court have been pictured hitting beaches all over the world showing off their gym-honed curves and proving you don’t need to be beanpole thin to look fabulous. Celebs who are bucking the trend include, Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Rowland, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Elle Macpherson and Serena Williams.

The Private Clinic: Strong is the new slim

Athlete and celebrity trainer, Laura Marin, reveals “For over six years, I ate a fat-free diet. Zero fat. I believed that was the healthiest way to get lean but all that happened was that I felt moody and weak, my skin was dry and much to my disappointment, I was no leaner than before. Needless to say I was frustrated and unhappy, but it still took a while to change that habit. Once I was out of dance world and learned more about nutrition and fitness, I realised that eating fat is essential for good health. Without it we are in danger of missing out on vitamins A,E and D. These fat – soluble vitamins play an important role in our good health. They are vital for our skin, our mood, our brain function, heart health, hormone balance and joints; the key is choosing the right fat. Be selective, those from monounsaturated sources are what you want to include in your diet and these include olive oil, avocados and nuts. Avoid saturated fats which are found in many processed foods as well as meat and dairy products.”

However, here at The Private Clinic we understand that some people, no matter how much effort they put into there diet and exercise regime, may still have stubborn pockets of fat that just won’t shift – preventing them from having the sculpted look that they strive for.

VASER Liposuction (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) uses the most advanced ultrasound technology to breakdown stubborn fat cells, which are then removed from the area through a suction process.  The ultrasound energy only targets fat cells, leaving all surrounding tissues undamaged, and involves minimal downtime. Our experience tells us that VASER Lipo is the most effective minimally invasive method of removing unwanted fat from your body, created a defined and sculpted area.

The Private Clinic: VASER Lipo

To fit the trend, our specialist Doctors at The Private Clinic have perfected body sculpting with VASER Hi-Def, for those of you who are after the more defined, athletic appearance.

The Private Clinic: Hi-Def

The Private Clinic is a training centre for Advanced VASER Liposuction. We perform close to 100 procedures every month. Our Doctors and medical teams are the most experienced in the country.

For more information about the procedure from our experts, let us know and we will be sure to pass the message on!

TOWIE Star Maria Fowler Undergoes Vaser Liposuction

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Earlier this month former TOWIE star, Maria Fowler, underwent VASER Liposuction.

The Essex reality star, who has made no secret of her desire to fight the flab with cosmetic surgery, took to Twitter to announce her decision to go under the knife back in September.

Maria is no stranger to the world of cosmetic surgery, having undergone a boob job in the past, and she previously admitted in The Sun newspaper that she wanted liposuction on her bottom because she hated the way it looked in a bikini.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, she said: “I see paparazzi pics of me in a bikini and I think I look too big – I hate it.”

Since her operation, Maria has been actively tweeting about the results of the treatment, which was carried out on her back, armpits, stomach, thighs and bottom.

Here are just some of the things she was saying about her treatment:

The Private Clinic: Maria Fowler

VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) uses the most advanced ultrasound technology to breakdown fat cells. A small probe is used to transmit energy and liquefy fat cells, prior to the removal of the fat through a gentle suction process. The results of the treatment are very soft and natural, so while the patient themselves will recognise the effects of the treatment, it may not be immediately obvious to those around them that that have undergone a cosmetic procedure. For those patients who prefer a more sculpted, athletic look, Vaser Hi-Def and Vaser Mid-Def may be more suitable.

The main advantages of VASER Liposuction, over surgical Liposuction are:

  • The  treatment involves a minimally invasive procedure
  • The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic,
  • VASER Lipo is a walk-in and walk-out procedure.
The Private Clinic: Maria Fowler

At The Private Clinic we have the largest and most experienced team of VASER Lipo doctors in the UK, with procedures available at our local clinics across the Country’s main cities. Our specialist doctors have performed over 4,000  procedures to date. We perform close to 1,000 minimally invasive VASER Liposuction treatments a year – more than any other clinic in Europe – and our doctors have perfected their skills and techniques to achieve the highest standard of natural looking results.

We offer the treatment at our clinics across the Coutry – in London, we have two highly experienced, specialised surgeons who  perform VASER liposuction – Dr. Wolf and Dr. Comins.

Dr. Wolf also operates from our Birmingham clinic, while Dr. Edwin delivers treatment in Leeds and Bristol, Dr. Cronin in Manchester and Dr. Connolly in both Leeds and Glasgow.

Anna Nelson’s Vaser Diary: After the treatment

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

After my vaser lipo procedure (which you can read about here) I left the clinic with my husband and we headed home. I wasn’t in any pain, but everything felt slightly hazy as if I was walking around in slow motion! I was wearing my black one piece which felt nice and comfy.

I was at first a little hesitant to feel around my abdomen – not sure how it would feel or if it would hurt. Thankfully I did not have to have any drains, as my husband who previously underwent the procedure had had to have, as I remember it didn’t look very comfortable with two straws sticking out!

When we reached home, my husband served me a Caesar salad and I realised just how hungry I was. I’d forgotten all about food after the day I’d had! It tasted lovely but I only sprinkled a tiny bit of the actual dressing on the salad – it just felt SO wrong eating fatty dressings after the surgery!

I slowly touched my belly and it felt firm. I had quite a bit of padding material underneath my compression garment which make my stomach look rather large. It had leaked quite a lot of blood and whatever else comes out, so later in the evening I decided to change the dressing. I stood up with the help of my husband Donavon, slowly unhooking my garment, which by the way, was very VERY tight. Once off, the dressing fell on to the floor and I felt a sudden rush in my head– I’m fainting!

I panicked a little and grabbed Donavon’s hand, trying to sit down on one of our high bar stools in the kitchen. The room was spinning as I tried to regain control. What was happening? Suddenly I remember an incident from when I was little in school – a friend of mine nearly fainted and our teacher made her sit down with her head between her legs, to try to get some more blood in the head. So I tried to do the same – not that easy with a sore stomach AND feeling like I might vomit! I tried to slowly make my way to the toilet but thankfully managed not to so I retreated to the sofa, and wondered if my compression garment might have been a little too tight. With the help of Donavon I put some fresh dressing on. My stomach was flat and very defined – I didn’t have a six pack – but I did have some beautiful lines on each side of the stomach muscles, making it look nice and fit! Hallelujah! I didn’t have a lot of bruising at all, some just underneath my breasts on top of my lower rib cage, and some on the very sides of my stomach. Also a little further down towards my knicker-line which is great because it meant that it wasn’t visible. Fantastic! 3 small hidden marks and two small marks in my bellybutton…that no one will ever see either! I was purring to myself in happiness. And I am now nearly two litres lighter. I wonder how much that will affect my weight!

Donovan and I made our way to our bedroom to watch some TV in bed. I had taken my antibiotics and the painkillers which the clinic had given me. I still felt no pain, just a slight ache and discomfort due to the tight garment. And of course – it was impossible to use my stomach muscles in any way! I manage to fall asleep at last, resting on my back, which unfortunately is not my favourite position to sleep in…I would rather snuggle up tight, with legs curled close to my hubby! I slept ok the first night, not as heavy as I normally would, but that is probably to be expected!

I survived the first night! Bring on day number two!..

Fillers: Picking The Correct Option For You

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

There have been a number of reports in the press lately about injectable skin fillers and the growing risks associated with them being carried out by untrained professionals. However there are of course two sides to every story and if carried out properly, skin fillers can be very safe and produce some excellent results.

Injections, such as Dermal Fillers, are becoming increasingly popular in the mainstream year on year, as women look for ways to emulate the look of their favourite stars. Dermal Fillers reduce facial lines and wrinkles and restore plumpness to the lips and cheeks – the perfect way to obtain Angelina’s sculptured facial features!

Is the Fad of advertising discounted procedures forcing on-lookers to become consumers on impulse alone?

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Are medical consumers becoming that much more price-sensitive, not fully understanding the risks associated with a surgical procedure?

There has been so much noise recently about unethical advertising for cosmetic surgery procedures, and in particular, how discounting surgery treatments results in impulse buying. Surgical treatments have traditionally involved weeks of research, days of consultations and hours of contemplation, but because of the increased supply of discount vouchers available on a daily basis, the process has become so much shorter – sometimes just one click away.

Laser liposuction procedures are being sold online for only £900, with offers available for a limited time. People are purchasing these procedures, in advance, without prior consultation and without even knowing who the medical team are that will be carrying out the treatment.  Surely, the Doctor experience should be one of the main considerations when deciding whether to go ahead with surgery or not. The safety of the procedure, as well as the results, depends on that.

Are you a suitable candidate? What is your family history? What is your medical history? How much do you weigh? How is your diet? Do you exercise? Are you taking any medication? These are only a few questions that need answering at an initial consultation, before any decision can be made on the suitability of the candidate.

But also, and just as important, your doctor should ask you why are you considering liposuction? What are you trying to achieve? Establishing your expectations clearly in consultation is vital to a successful treatment.
